Our New Art Gallery

We have created a new category in our online shop called "Art Gallery". Here we will feature the best handmade art pieces Maui has to offer. Please check back often as we hope to be adding new artists and unique pieces regularly.
Our first featured artist is our surfing pal Bill Coulter.

Bill Coulter

Friend Bill Coulter handcrafts the traditional Hawaiian canoe replicas found in our Art Gallery.

Raised in Southern California and a surfer since his childhood, Bill developed a keen interest in the ocean, which continues to this day. After high school graduation, Bill traveled to Hawaii to try his hand at the famous Hawaiian surfing locales. Experiencing the power of the ocean and the Aloha spirit of the wonderful people, Bill knew that Hawaii would someday be his home.

Fascinated by the sport and tradition of canoe paddling, Bill started researching the history and design of Polynesian canoes and in doing so, he has gained a great respect for their builders, voyagers and navigators. In an effort to express his love and regard for these fine water men and their achievements, Bill has been creating these highly crafted replica canoes for over 15 years. Having completed hundreds of canoes in his Makawao workshop, Bill can truly be considered a master of this fine craft.

Each piece is individually designed and executed using Hawaiian Koa wood and trimmed in assorted hardwoods. Each canoe comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Halalu

Yesterday we went fishing for 'oama (young weke).....it takes skill to catch them! The guy next to me was constantly bringing them up, while I, on the other hand caught zero. I gave up and went for a paddle instead.
After returning home and checking our phone messages, I hear my dad saying there is a huge school of halalu (young akule) in the harbor. Well.......

Today was a different story. It was so much fun! Throw your pole in, watch your floater go down, pull up a fish....not much skill required. We caught enough to share with some friends and have a delicious dinner. "Krispy Kritters" (salt & pepper, fry until skin is crispy), hot rice w/furikake, kim chee and tomatos with our secret family dressing (mayonaise mixed w/shoyu). Ono!
