What's new in August

We have added Pahu to our Hula supplies. These beautiful pahu are made by our friend Ika Vea of Kapa'au. He is an excellent craftsman and a really cool guy. We met Ika at the very first Merrie Monarch craft show we attended in 1994. I will never forget the friendliness, helpfulness and generosity he showed us. He even made us a sander that we still use to this day! We love Ika Vea.

Kent has been working on some ipu heke. This year, the large ipu are not available so we only have the small and medium ipu heke.

But they all sound good!

As usual, I have been busy sewing lots and lots of 'uli'uli. Our complete hula sets are popular. Here are some Keiki sets we just put together for one of our Maui halau.

And, naturally, we try to get to the beach whenever possible (Here's a video of Kent Surfing)!

Yesterday evening, while I worked out paddling canoe, Kent fished for oama (and caught a few). So now he set up his big pole cause the plan is to catch oama, use some for bait, catch a big papio. Of course, if that doesn't work we'll just eat the bait. Reminds me of when we were young going fishing with Dad and didn't catch anything (which was rare back then). It was shrimp omelette or boiled squid for dinner!

Today's 'Olelo No'eau: Ola no ka lawai'a i kahi po'o maunu./A fisherman can subsist on his left-over bait.
