Hula Halau O Ishibashi

Our friends Chiharu (4th from left) and Kazu are surfer/windsurfers who come to visit Maui about once a year. Great picture...those ipu are pretty nice too!

What cuties! Their 'Opio sets arrived in Anaheim, CA in time for their Christmas performance.

A Kona storm is now making its way over Maui this very windy and rainy morning. We have a High Wind Warning (winds 25 to 40 with gust to 75mph), Flash Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory.

Normally we surfers like Kona winds (15mph or less) with High Surf Advisories.....

This is Kent noseriding a wave yesterday, just before the winds picked up. We surfed here Monday and it was a BLAST! A lot of times this is the only place to surf when everywhere else is closing out.

Kahului Harbor Threat

Both Kent and I have many fond memories of Kahului Harbor. As kids, crabbing and fishing at night off Pier 2 (when you could actually drive your car in). Paddling canoe every summer. Catching 'oama or halalu.

My dad used to bring us to the end of the break wall onto the cement pilings to fish. There, we climbed down with no poles, just line wrapped around a piece of cardboard, a hook and piece of shrimp. We used to catch "crispy critters", assorted small fish which were fried till crispy and enjoyed with hot rice and kim chee. Yum!

Kent's dad Jesse and my dad Take are both fishermen and members of Hale Kiawe, a senior citizens fishing club. They have a clubhouse near the boat ramp where all the uncles gather each morning to look at the ocean conditions, talk stories and care for the grounds there. O yea, and fish.

Our boys Alika, Bronson and Kila, are avid bodyboarders who love to get barreled at the jetty! It is an occassion to find all three generations enjoying the harbor at the same time.

Alas, change is eminent, for better or worse is in the eyes of the beholder.

But, storms do pass....hopefully without leaving behind permanent damage.

Today's 'Olelo No'eau: Ua la'i ka makani Ho'olua. The Ho'olua gale has calmed.
The wrath has ceased. The trouble is passed.
